How Do You Install With No Power? | Field Nation Alternative Client Service Call Example | Make money as an IT Field Technician

In this video, I’m showing an example of an onsite service call where I made $185 and didn’t actually do any work. This is something you can do as an independent information technology field tech.

This job was to install a cradlepoint so the site would have internet since it was in a remote small town and didn’t have good internet available. Ironically no one was there and the building didn’t even have power!

I have worked with Field Nation alternative clients in the freelance IT tech industry since 2000. I’ve been a Field Nation technician since 2010 and on Work Market since 2011.

Things don’t always go right when you’re doing service work.

I am out at this site and there’s literally no power.

Nobody’s here.

There is a lockbox.

I got the lockbox key and got into the building and looked

around.

Went to the breaker box.

There’s no power at all in the building, so I can’t do my install.

Of course, it’s in Timbuktu.

That’s always fun.

You know, I drove all the way out here.

Fortunately, I built in and requested travel for this, and I get paid a minimum of an hour for coming out.

Even though there wasn’t power at the site, even though I wasn’t able to complete any work,

the fact that I had counter offered upfront for travel

meant that when I was done with this call,

I actually made $200 and did no work.

I was, of course, willing to do the work and prepared to do the work.

I walked around the building and I looked for

the breaker boxes. I tried to flip breakers. I tried to do what I could do to get power. Now, I’m not an electrician, so I’m not going to go super deep, but I can turn breakers on.

And I tried that. I still had zero power anywhere in the building. So obviously

power was off at some other point, maybe outside.

And that’s beyond my ability and scope.

Then I called the Field Nation alternative client and I let them know about the situation

and they had to try to work their way through the chain of command on their side to see if they could get somebody to get to the site to get me power

or what they were going to decide to do.

So all in all, took me about an hour and a quarter

to go through that whole process and for them to finally decide, okay, there’s nothing we can do today. We’re going to go ahead and release you from site.

This is a good example of the type of situations you’re going to run into when you’re out running field

service calls.
